1. Advancing Renewable Energy and Clean Energy Transition
National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) recognizes renewable energy development and the transition toward net-zero emissions as important priorities in its sustainability governance.
The university seeks to increase renewable energy use by combining campus energy planning, interdisciplinary expertise, and cooperation with external partners.
At the Sustainability Development Committee meeting held on September 17, 2026, Chief Sustainability Officer Professor Chien-Te Fan emphasized the transformation of campus energy systems through energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy storage, and intelligent energy management.
With net-zero emissions by 2050 as its long-term direction, NTHU aims to progressively increase renewable energy adoption while connecting institutional experience with wider regional sustainability initiatives.
2. Campus Solar Photovoltaics and Renewable Energy Applications
NTHU utilizes suitable campus rooftops and facilities for solar photovoltaic installations, demonstrating the practical application of renewable energy in an educational institution.
Rooftop solar photovoltaic systems integrate renewable electricity generation with existing building infrastructure, providing visible examples of clean energy development.
In September 2026, NTHU's Sustainability Development Committee highlighted renewable energy diversification as an important strategic direction.
The university encourages academic and administrative units to identify potential sites for additional renewable energy installations and to assess solar electricity generation, on-site consumption, renewable energy certificates, and operational feasibility.
The Chief Sustainability Officer further emphasized the importance of long-term maintenance, financial sustainability, and risk assessment in renewable energy development.
Through campus solar installations and renewable energy planning, NTHU develops practical experience that can support knowledge exchange and future cooperation with external organizations.
3. Promoting Renewable Energy Through External Partnerships
Renewable energy development requires cooperation across technological, financial, operational, and institutional dimensions.
NTHU encourages university units to identify opportunities for renewable energy projects, with the Center for Sustainability and Resilience Development supporting site assessment, external resource coordination, and access to professional expertise.
During the 2026 Sustainability Development Committee meeting, discussions highlighted the importance of coordinated planning for solar photovoltaic development, including consideration of technical suitability, operational risks, and external expertise.
NTHU's Greater Hsinchu Regional Sustainable Development Platform also connects corporate ESG resources with academic expertise and local sustainability networks.
These institutional arrangements provide opportunities for sharing knowledge on renewable energy, energy management, and decarbonization beyond the university.
By connecting campus renewable energy experience with regional partners, NTHU supports wider dialogue and collaboration on clean energy transition.
4. Supporting Greater Renewable Energy Adoption
NTHU continues to promote renewable energy generation and use alongside improvements in energy efficiency and intelligent energy management.
For 2026–2027, the university plans to establish a pathway toward net-zero emissions by 2050, develop interim performance indicators, and strengthen energy assessment and monitoring.
Within the broader international transition toward 100% renewable energy, NTHU recognizes the importance of universities in technological innovation, knowledge sharing, and public engagement.
Through campus demonstration projects, professional exchange, and collaboration with external organizations, the university seeks to encourage wider renewable energy adoption and contribute to regional decarbonization.
These efforts support SDG 7, SDG 13, and SDG 17 by promoting clean energy applications and cross-sector sustainability cooperation.
