NTHU Support for Low-carbon Start-ups and Green Technology Innovation
THE Impact Rankings Indicator: 7.4.5 Assistance to Low-carbon Innovation
1. Institutional Support for Low-carbon Innovation and Start-up Development
National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) supports innovative start-ups through its Operations Center for Industry Collaboration (OCIC), Innovation Incubation Center, and NTHU Garage.
These platforms provide resources for technology transfer, business incubation, entrepreneurial mentoring, industry collaboration, investment matchmaking, and research commercialization.
NTHU's entrepreneurial ecosystem supports ventures in fields including clean energy, circular economy, sustainable agriculture, and green technologies.
NTHU Garage provides start-up facilities, expert mentoring, business training, investment connections, and networking opportunities to help teams develop their technologies and business models.
2. Low-carbon and Circular Economy Start-up Support in 2025
2.1 Green Monster Technology: Organic Waste Valorization and Circular Economy
Green Monster Technology is a start-up supported by the 16th cohort of NTHU Garage.
The team develops black soldier fly-based biotechnology to convert food waste and other organic materials into valuable products, including insect protein and organic fertilizer.
Its approach offers opportunities for waste reduction, resource recovery, and circular economy development.
NTHU Garage has supported the team through mentoring and entrepreneurial guidance, helping it explore technology applications, business development, and market opportunities.
According to NTHU Garage's published achievements, Green Monster Technology collaborated with Chiayi County Government on a circular economy initiative in 2025.
This demonstrates how university-supported green entrepreneurship can connect innovative technologies with local sustainability needs.
2.2 RenaiSun: Solar-powered Drying Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture
RenaiSun is another start-up supported by the 16th cohort of NTHU Garage.
The venture develops solar-powered drying technologies for agricultural processing, exploring how renewable energy can support more sustainable agricultural value chains.
Its modular drying technology and related monitoring applications aim to improve agricultural processing efficiency and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
Through entrepreneurial mentoring and access to start-up resources, NTHU Garage supports the team's business development, product positioning, and commercialization planning.
The university's published start-up achievements also record recognition for the team in entrepreneurship competitions.
3. Expansion of New Energy Start-up Support in 2026
3.1 Tsing Hua² Technology Park: New Energy Entrepreneurship and Deep-tech Commercialization
On August 10, 2026, NTHU officially launched Tsing Hua² Technology Park to strengthen the connection between university research, technology commercialization, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration.
New energy was identified as one of the park's initial priority sectors, alongside semiconductors, quantum technologies, biomedical technologies, and artificial intelligence.
The initiative includes two major support mechanisms:
- Tsing Hua Future Fund: The fund has an initial target size of approximately NT$1 billion and is designed to support deep-tech ventures from the seed stage to growth stages, prioritizing NTHU spin-offs and ventures founded by faculty, students, and alumni.
- Tsing Hua Accelerator: The accelerator aims to connect emerging companies with talent, research facilities, capital, markets, and supply-chain resources.
These initiatives provide a potential pathway for new energy and low-carbon technology ventures to access incubation and commercialization support.
The announced fund target represents planned investment capacity, not funding already allocated to low-carbon start-ups.
3.2 Research-based Entrepreneurship in Energy Materials
In September 2026, a team from Professor Tzu-Ying Lin's laboratory in NTHU's Department of Materials Science and Engineering was selected among the top 20 teams in Taiwan's From IP to IPO (FITI 115-2) innovation and entrepreneurship programme.
The laboratory conducts research on all-solid-state lithium batteries, thin-film solar cells, micro-energy storage devices, and sustainable energy materials.
Its research also explores technologies that convert waste materials into value-added energy storage applications.
Participation in the FITI programme demonstrates the potential for translating university energy materials research into entrepreneurial activities.
This achievement represents research-based entrepreneurship development rather than evidence that an independent low-carbon start-up company has already been established.
3.3 Continued Entrepreneurship Support through NTHU Garage
In 2026, NTHU Garage continued recruiting and supporting entrepreneurial teams through structured training, expert mentoring, investment matchmaking, and international networking.
Available resources include free start-up office space, Maker Space facilities, one-on-one mentoring, fundraising opportunities, and entrepreneurial awards.
These services provide an entrepreneurial support environment accessible to low-carbon and green technology innovators.
4. Technology Transfer and Industry Collaboration
NTHU's Operations Center for Industry Collaboration promotes technology transfer and the commercialization of academic research, helping innovative technologies connect with industry needs.
The Innovation Incubation Center also provides business mentoring, assistance with government programmes, technical collaboration opportunities, market development support, and investment matchmaking.
For low-carbon technologies, these mechanisms can support entrepreneurship, research commercialization, and collaboration with industry partners.
Some technology transfer and industry collaboration projects are subject to commercial confidentiality, and details of individual companies, contractual arrangements, and technologies are therefore not publicly disclosed.
5. Continuing Commitment
NTHU continues integrating research innovation, technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration to support start-ups developing clean energy, energy storage, circular economy, and other low-carbon solutions.
Through NTHU Garage, the Innovation Incubation Center, OCIC, and Tsing Hua² Technology Park, the university is strengthening its entrepreneurial ecosystem to help translate technological innovation into sustainable industrial applications.
