NTHU Community Outreach on Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency
THE Impact Rankings Indicator: 7.4.1 Local Community Outreach for Energy Efficiency
1. Objectives and Community Education Framework
National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) provides educational opportunities on energy efficiency, clean energy, and net-zero transitions for local residents and external learners through its Continuing Education Center, College of Sustainability, and academic departments.
These initiatives include publicly accessible continuing education courses, professional net-zero training programmes, and lectures on energy transition.
By making university expertise available beyond campus, NTHU seeks to increase public understanding of renewable energy technologies, responsible energy use, carbon reduction, and the relationship between energy systems and climate change.
2. Energy Transition Outreach in 2025
Lecture: The Multi-scale Challenges of Energy Transition
On November 19, 2025, NTHU's Institute of Sociology organized a lecture entitled "The Multi-scale Challenges of Energy Transition."
The lecture addressed the technical, market, and institutional dimensions of Taiwan's energy transition, including renewable electricity markets, corporate green electricity procurement, renewable energy certificates, and related policy frameworks.
The event announcement included a public registration link, providing an opportunity for interested participants to engage with contemporary issues surrounding clean energy development and energy governance.
This activity complemented the university's broader outreach efforts by making energy transition research and policy discussions accessible to a wider audience.
3. Public Energy Education and Net-zero Training in 2026
3.1 Green Energy Continuing Education Course
In 2026, NTHU's Continuing Education Center announced a Green Energy course at its Nanda Campus, open to members of the general public.
The course was scheduled for October 22 to November 26, 2026, comprising six sessions and 18 instructional hours.
Topics include:
- Introduction to green energy and the global energy transition.
- Solar energy technologies and applications.
- Wind energy technologies.
- Geothermal energy.
- Tidal energy.
- Biomass energy.
The course also introduces net-zero emissions, energy management, sustainable development, and energy conservation.
Designed for adult learners and community members, the programme helps participants understand the characteristics, applications, and limitations of major renewable energy technologies.
As of October 2026, the course had been announced but had not yet commenced.
3.2 Ministry of Environment Net-zero Green Talent Training
In 2026, NTHU's College of Sustainability collaborated with Taiwan's Ministry of Environment to offer professional training in net-zero transition and carbon management.
The university announced two 48-hour courses scheduled for March 7–29 and April 18–May 10, 2026.
The training covered greenhouse gas inventories, emission reduction practices, net-zero policy, carbon markets, and practical sustainability management.
These publicly advertised programmes provided learning opportunities for professionals and external participants seeking to develop skills in carbon management and low-carbon transitions.
Although primarily designed for professional development, they extend university sustainability education beyond regularly enrolled students.
3.3 Net-zero Carbon Planning and Management Certification Preparation
On February 10–11, 2026, NTHU's Continuing Education Center scheduled an introductory certification preparation course for net-zero carbon planning and management.
The programme was publicly advertised to external learners seeking knowledge and professional skills related to carbon management and net-zero transitions.
As a professional training initiative, it complements broader community-oriented clean energy education.
4. Key Features of NTHU's Community Energy Education
4.1 Access for External Learners
Through publicly advertised courses and lectures, NTHU offers learning opportunities to individuals who are not enrolled as regular university students.
These initiatives support public access to university expertise in clean energy technologies, carbon management, and sustainability.
4.2 Connecting Energy Technologies with Everyday Sustainability
The programmes introduce solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, and biomass energy while addressing related topics such as energy management, climate change, and carbon reduction.
This approach helps participants connect technical knowledge with the wider environmental and social significance of responsible energy use.
4.3 Different Learning Pathways
NTHU offers introductory green energy courses, professional net-zero training, and academic lectures addressing energy transition issues.
Together, these activities provide multiple pathways for community members, professionals, and interested learners to develop their understanding of clean energy and energy efficiency.
5. Continuing Commitment
NTHU will continue integrating continuing education, sustainability research, and interdisciplinary academic resources to provide educational opportunities for the wider community.
Through accessible courses, public lectures, and professional training, the university seeks to strengthen public understanding of energy conservation, renewable energy technologies, and low-carbon transitions.
These outreach activities support broader public engagement with sustainable energy development and responsible energy use.
