Green Pine Community University centres its work on the “Watershed School” approach. Drawing on resources from the Ministry of Education’s “Community Universities and Twelve-Year Basic Education” programme and Higher Education Sprout Project, it collaborates with local schools, communities, and other community universities to provide educational programmes on freshwater ecosystems. Through watershed field walks, environmental observation, and joint lesson planning, participants learn about the hydrology, ecology, and local industries associated with Yangang Creek, Keya Creek, and the Touqian River, developing an understanding of the connections between streams, irrigation canals, and residents’ everyday lives.
In 2025, Green Pine partnered with Nanai Elementary School to integrate freshwater ecosystem education with the school’s rice cultivation programme. Through stream ecology observation and measurements of pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity, students learned about irrigation water sources, water quality assessment, and the effects of pollution on ecosystems. Collaborative courses developed with other community universities also introduced the water purification and habitat functions of constructed wetlands, promoting community understanding of and participation in freshwater environmental protection.
Related courses in 2025 included:
- Watershed Excursions: Keya Creek and the Dahan River — 72 hours, 4 credits.
- Tracing the Stream to Its Source — Water Resource Conservation in Yanshuigang (February 27–June 26).
