To deepen the promotion and implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) recently collaborated with the Miaoli County Environmental Protection Bureau to host the “SDGs Sustainability Development Workshop.” Through cross-sector collaboration and hands-on activities, the workshop aimed to cultivate awareness and participation in sustainability issues among young students and local communities, thereby advancing sustainable development in the Miaoli region.

Professor Kuo-Tai Cheng, Chair of the Department of Environmental and Cultural Resources at NTHU, stated that the “SDGs Implementation Program” encourages students to adopt innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to integrate sustainability concepts into local actions. The collaboration with the Miaoli County Environmental Protection Bureau was intended to combine academic resources with local experience to foster talents equipped with both sustainability thinking and practical skills.

The workshop included participation from multiple departments of the Miaoli County Government, such as the Transportation and Public Works Department, Industrial Development Department, Labor and Youth Development Department, and the Agriculture Department. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the 17 SDGs and shared how their respective fields connect with sustainability, aiming to integrate resources and enhance policy effectiveness through interdepartmental cooperation.

Workshop content addressed key SDG themes including climate change, resource recycling, energy transition, and community building. Through case studies and field visits, participants explored both the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in Miaoli, and collectively discussed feasible solutions.

The Miaoli County Environmental Protection Bureau stated that it continues to develop environmental education resources and promote professional development through activities such as the SDGs workshop. The collaboration with NTHU further strengthened the connection between local government and academic institutions, uniting efforts for sustainable progress in Miaoli. Each participating department will draft specific action plans within their respective domains, setting short-, medium-, and long-term goals to systematically advance sustainability.

Additionally, the workshop not only deepened the cooperation between NTHU and the Miaoli County Government but also provided a platform for interdisciplinary exchange. Participants from diverse backgrounds and fields worked together to discuss and implement ideas, generating a wealth of innovative thinking and injecting new momentum into local sustainable development.
