The Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (TSAA), organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), has announced its list of award recipients. National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) received four recognitions in total: three faculty teams received two Gold Awards and one Silver Award, while Ms. Li-Chien Shen, a student in the Interdisciplinary Program of Hsinchu Humanities and Social Sciences, received the Taiwan Outstanding Sustainable Youth Award.


Professor Ching-Ting Hsin, Department of Early Childhood Education|Indigenous Language Preservation & Social Inclusion

Professor Hsin’s team began with children’s reading materials in the Atayal language, combining community participation with AI speech technology to promote Indigenous language preservation and cultural identity. The teaching model has also been extended to the Cherokee Indigenous community in the United States. Through these efforts, Indigenous languages are not only preserved but also integrated into children’s learning and development, opening up new possibilities for the transmission of Indigenous cultures.


Professor De-Hao Tsai, Department of Chemical Engineering|Chemical Carbon Capture, Hydrogen Production & Reuse

Professor Tsai’s team has developed technologies for low-carbon hydrogen production, carbon dioxide capture, and reuse, while collaborating with the Chang Chun Group and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to advance industrial applications. The technology not only reduces carbon emissions from hydrogen production but also transforms carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere into a reusable resource, taking carbon reduction a step further toward a circular economy.


Professor Chih-Huang Lai, Department of Materials Science and Engineering|All-Type Lithium Battery Recycling Technology

Professor Lai’s team has developed low-carbon, high-efficiency lithium battery recycling technology and established a 5-kilogram-scale production line, demonstrating its potential for industrial-scale circular recycling. As large numbers of lithium batteries reach the end of their service life worldwide, this technology can recover critical metals from spent batteries, reducing the environmental impacts associated with mining and energy-intensive refining while turning discarded batteries back into valuable resources.


Ms. Li-Chien Shen was selected as a Taiwan Outstanding Sustainable Youth for her long-term commitment to disability rights, life education, accessible design, and environmental sustainability. Drawing on her own life experiences, she has transformed them into meaningful social action and continued to advocate for a society in which everyone can participate equally.


From Indigenous languages and cultural heritage to net-zero technologies and disability inclusion, NTHU continues to respond to sustainability challenges through research, innovation, and action—bringing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to life across every corner of the campus and society.
