The National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) USR Project, "Tnunan Opera Concert: Cultivating Atayal Medical Professionals through Culturally Responsive Teaching," is jointly led by Professors Fu-Yuan Chiu, Liu Shu-Chin, Fang-Yu Chang, and Po-Fang Tsai. The project integrates the musical The Atayal Doctor Is Here, performances by the Atayal Academy Youth Choir, and culturally responsive teaching to address the shortage of medical resources in Jianshi Township while encouraging Indigenous youth to pursue careers in healthcare.
The Atayal Academy Youth Choir, one of the project's performing ensembles, achieved a historic victory at the 8th Tokyo International Choir Competition on July 27, 2026, winning the Overall Grand Prix and becoming the first Taiwanese choir in the competition's eight-year history to receive this highest honor. The choir also earned First Prize (Gold Award) in both the Youth Category and the Contemporary Category, along with several special awards. Its conductor, Bsyal Makus (Wei-Yuan Hsu), was also recognized with the Best Conductor Award.
