In response to Sustainable Development Goals, National Tsinghua University has set this week as the Sustainable Development Week, holding a series of activities such as seminars and thesis contests, and inviting students to propose sustainable campus practice plans and soliciting hundreds of Waste Styrofoam to purify wastewater from the semiconductor industry and other "green ideas". Vice President and Sustainability Director Nian-Hua Thi pointed out that the seeds of sustainable development will be deeply planted in the hearts of every teacher and student, make good use of the research major, and contribute to Taiwan's society and the earth's ecology.

Under the guidance of Professor Yong-Jian Ling, master students Yan-Ting Lin and Yu-Hao Hu from the Institute of Chemistry , using the concept of "reducing waste with waste", used waste styrofoam to purify arsenic-containing semiconductor industry wastewater. They also participated in this student research competition . This research corresponds to the three objectives of Sustainable Development Goals, including water purification, industrial innovation, and responsible consumption and production models.

In addition, Pin-Xuan Chen, a second-year student of the NTHU, also participated in a student research competition. Under the guidance of Professor Yu-Lin Wang, he could quickly screen the new crown virus chip within 5 minutes by using saliva. The research corresponds to the goals of promoting health and well-being in the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Pin-Xuan Chen said that the new coronavirus has a special protein "nucleocapsid protein." She first embeds antibodies corresponding to this protein on both ends of the chip, then drops saliva on the chip and inserts it into the card reader. If the subject is infected with new coronary pneumonia, the antibody will attract the nucleocapsid protein like a magnet, causing the current signal to change; and the higher the virus concentration, the greater the current signal difference. In the future, there will be one step to develop equipment that can be operated at home by the public to check for viruses.
