Sustainable Development Goals

This year, our university received two honors at the Global Views Monthly University Social Responsibility (USR) Awards: the “Excellence Award in the Well-being and Co-prosperity Category” and the “Model Award in the Sustainability Report Category,” demonstrating the cumulative impact of our long-term commitment.

Among them, the project titled “Supporting Caregivers: The Implementation of an AI-Assisted Social Work Documentation System,” which won the Excellence Award in the Well-being and Co-prosperity Category, was developed by a team led by Professor Tao-Wei Wang from the Department of Physics. The project addresses the long-standing documentation burden faced by frontline social workers.

Professor Wang explained that after conducting visits, social workers often spend a significant amount of time organizing records and writing reports. This not only reduces the time available for direct service but also increases their workload. The AI-assisted system uses speech-to-text transcription and AI analysis to help organize key points from visits, assess case conditions, and suggest possible follow-up actions. It also generates family relationship maps, streamlining what was previously a fragmented and time-consuming process.

Since its launch in August last year, the system has been used tens of thousands of times and has generated over 12,000 visit records. Currently, around 400 social workers use the system daily. The team has also been invited to share their experience with social affairs departments of local governments and professional social work communities across Taiwan.

Regarding the recognition from the USR Awards, Professor Wang emphasized that this achievement belongs to the entire team. He noted that the project was made possible through the contributions of former researcher Yi-Ning Juan from the NTHU AI Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (also an alumnus of the Department of Computer Science), graduate student Ya-Hui Chang from the Department of Computer Science, undergraduate student Wei-Che Lo from the Department of Physics, and the collaborative guidance of Professor Jui-Yi Shih from the Department of Social Work at Asia University. Together, they developed a system that allows social workers to step back from heavy paperwork and dedicate more time and energy to themselves and to those they serve.

Model Award in the Sustainability Report Category: Four Consecutive Years of Recognition

At the same ceremony, the university also received the “Model Award in the Sustainability Report Category,” marking the fourth consecutive year since 2023 that it has earned this distinction.

Dr. Fu-Jen Lin, Chief Sustainability Officer of the university, stated that the university firmly believes sustainability is a daily practice—one that meets present needs while preserving opportunities for future generations. “This recognition is deeply meaningful to us and belongs to every individual committed to sustainability. It also reminds us to keep moving forward.”

From pioneering the establishment of a university-wide Chief Sustainability Officer system in Taiwan, to conducting campus-wide carbon inventories with third-party verification, advancing various USR projects in local communities, and developing the AI-assisted social work documentation system, the university continues to put its sustainability理念 into action—demonstrating that actions speak louder than words.

More sustainability initiatives are currently being showcased at the “2026 NTHU Sustainability Expo,” featuring diverse projects from multiple teams across different fields. We warmly invite everyone to visit and witness these inspiring stories of sustainability in action.
