The first indigenous science development base in Taiwan, the "Qingda Bamboo House," located on the campus of National Tsing Hua University, was completed and put into use. Elderly indigenous people presided over the blessing and donation ceremony, and representatives from 16 indigenous tribes and legislator Kao Chin Su-mei, who promoted the bamboo house, were present to offer blessings. The Tsing Hua Bamboo House combines indigenous wisdom with innovative construction methods, using nearly ten thousand stems of bamboo to create the structure. The interior not only displays indigenous culture but also uses AR augmented reality technology to showcase the scientific wisdom of indigenous ancestors.
During the inauguration ceremony, Atayal indigenous elder, Kumy, chanted blessings in his native language, praying for the blessings of the indigenous science center, and invited guests to sprinkle millet wine on the ground, symbolizing respect and love for the land. The elder also presented a famous hunting knife from the Taroko tribe in Hualien to Tsing Hua University, which will become a treasure of the bamboo house.
The attending guests then worked together to make mochi, and elementary school students from Wufeng indigenous school in Hsinchu County performed a performance of the Saisiyat tribe suite at the ceremony.
President W. John Kao said that indigenous culture is the accumulation of thousands of years of wisdom, especially in the coexistence of humans and nature, it is particularly worth learning from. He hopes that the wisdom of indigenous peoples can lead Tsing Hua to sustainable development and looks forward to more opportunities for cooperation with indigenous groups in the future.
Legislator Kao Chin Su-mei recalled the difficult process of promoting the construction of the bamboo house. From proposing the plan in 2019 to the present, it took four years. During this period, they experienced soaring building material prices, the COVID-19 pandemic, and issues related to the use of the site. The important promoter of the bamboo house, Elder Hitay Payan, was also ill but has now recovered and witnessed the birth of the "child." They pray that the ancestors will always take care of and bless everyone.
Tsing Hua University stated that in 2019, the first indigenous science development center in Taiwan was established, and a bamboo house combining traditional bamboo craftsmanship was built on campus as a dedicated teaching, display, conference, and office space for the center.
After the bamboo house is put into use, Director of Tsing Hua Indigenous Science Development Center, Fu Li-Yu, said that more indigenous scientific exploration and practical activities will be carried out, representing Tsing Hua's determination to value and continue to promote indigenous education.
Walking along a small path next to the motorcycle tower on Guangfu Road into the campus, you can see the bamboo house integrated with nature in the lush forest. There are also traditional indigenous living facilities such as granaries for storing millet, a 3-meter-high observation tower, and a stone stove outdoors. Many Tsing Hua students like to bring their lunch here, saying that it is the most soothing space on campus.
Fu Li-Yu said that the bamboo house uses Makino bamboo sourced locally from Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. There is one floor above ground and one below, with a first-floor audiovisual space and office and conference rooms that can accommodate 50 people. The basement is a cultural exhibition and teaching space.
National Tsing Hua University stated that the construction and equipment costs for the bamboo house totaled more than NT$40 million, all subsidized by the Ministry of Education and the Council of Indigenous Peoples. The basement of the bamboo house is a teaching exhibition space. The Center for Indigenous Studies and Education at National Tsing Hua University has also developed over 17 experiential modules for exploration and hands-on learning, including AR augmented reality, VR virtual reality, and DIY hands-on projects. In the future, the bamboo house will lead students to experience making Taiya wooden xylophones, propellers, mountain quail flutes, bamboo spears, and more.
