Tsing Hua University to Host Migrant Worker Basketball Tournament on June 7–8 to Promote Cultural Integration(CNA, reported by Lu Gang-Jun in Hsinchu on May 7) The Center for Sports Enterprise and Policy at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) announced that it will host the Greater Hsinchu Migrant Worker Basketball Tournament on June 7 and 8 at the Star Basketball Court in Zhubei City, Hsinchu County. The event aims to help migrant workers relieve physical and mental stress while fostering cultural integration.

According to a press release issued by the Center, due to Taiwan’s declining birthrate, many industries rely on migrant workers to fill labor shortages. These workers, who strive to make a living far from home, also need quality recreational activities to ease stress. With support from government agencies, NTHU has organized a basketball tournament exclusively for migrant workers.

Professor Huang Yu from NTHU’s Department of Sports Science, who is leading the project, explained that in order to create a tournament tailored specifically for migrant workers, the planning team held consultation meetings with them as early as March. These meetings ensured that the competition rules and arrangements align with the workers' habits and preferences. The tournament is scheduled for June 7–8 at the Star Basketball Court in Zhubei.

Huang also noted that the tournament incorporates eco-friendly practices, such as going paperless, minimizing waste, reusing materials, adopting green procurement, and encouraging participants to bring reusable cups. Even the trophies are made of camphor wood as part of the sustainable approach.

He expressed hope that the event will help migrant workers feel welcomed and supported by the local community while enhancing their quality of life. Looking ahead, NTHU plans to offer courses for migrant workers in language skills, financial literacy, fraud prevention, and legal education. The university also intends to support businesses in improving labor and human rights conditions for migrant employees.

To encourage participation, registration for the tournament is free and participants will receive gifts. For more information, interested individuals can contact NTHU’s Center for Sports Enterprise and Policy. Huang added that he hopes more local organizations and businesses will join in supporting issues concerning migrant workers and new residents, contributing to a more inclusive society.
