National Tsing Hua University has won the first prize of the "Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Award" for the second time! The 15th annual TCSA Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards, organized by the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Institute (TCSI), were presented yesterday. National Tsing Hua University ( NTHU ) won the first prize among the 47 participating universities, ranking first in the overall evaluation and winning the Gold Award for the University Sustainability Report in the single category.
The jury pointed out that NTHU combines classroom learning, campus activities, service learning, and social experiences to expand the scope of the study, enrich learning content, and foster a diverse, flexible, and cross-disciplinary learning environment and innovative education model to cultivate cross-disciplinary talents with local care and global mobility. In addition, the University's Sustainable Development Committee is responsible for formulating strategies for sustainable development, unifying internal and external resources, promoting cross-disciplinary cooperation, and guiding faculty members in the promotion of sustainable development goals, thus realizing the goal of sustainable development as revealed in Tsinghua's motto: "Self-improvement and Virtue".
The Chief Convenor of the Sustainability Award, Mr. Chien also praised NTHU for being the first university in Taiwan to establish a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) and the Sunrise Program to take care of disadvantaged students. In addition to Vice President Dai Nianhua's role as CSO, all 26 administrative and academic units have a CSO and a Sustainability Committee, with the Regional Innovation Center as the executive unit, to integrate the university's efforts to implement sustainability goals. Since 2013, NTHU has established the "Sunrise Group", an admissions channel for outstanding students with relatively disadvantaged socio-economic status and lack of financial resources, who have the potential to receive the Sunrise Scholarship.
The award ceremony was held yesterday afternoon at the Grand Hotel in Taipei. President Gao Wei-yuan received the award on behalf of National Tsing Hua University and received the award from Legislative Yuan President You Xi-kun, which recognizes the University's achievements in sustainable development.
In the field of research, NTHU will provide more opportunities for faculty and students to respond to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through cross-disciplinary research. In terms of interaction with the outside world, we will build a platform for joint development, seek cooperation and complementarity with the government and industry, and propose innovative ideas and solutions.
According to Lin Furen, vice CSO at NTHU, the most important mission of the university is research, teaching and service. Therefore, from the very beginning of promoting the goal of sustainable development, faculty and students were encouraged to align their ongoing research with the goal of sustainable development. This year, we have developed an intelligent and automatic tagging system that links faculty and student research to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as "Clean Water and Sanitation," "Conservation of Watershed Ecology," and "Elimination of Inequality.
This year, National Tsing Hua University has expanded student involvement in promoting sustainability. In addition to electing 16 student sustainability ambassadors, Huang Chuan, a master's degree student at NTHU, has created the "NTHU Green Dot" team, which organizes sustainability salons to connect sustainability ideas on campus from dots to lines, and then expand them to a plane. We are also working with other student sustainability teams, such as the Maintenance Chat Room, which encourages people to bring in broken household items such as small appliances to be repaired and updated. There is also a student team, RElec, which recycles electronic waste such as chargers, headphones, and cables.
The Taiwan Sustainable University Competition covers six major components, including "university sustainability vision and strategy," "school governance performance," "social inclusion performance," "environmental sustainability performance," "financial planning and operational performance," and "compliance or rewarding performance," with university governance, society, environment, and partnerships as the main axes of comprehensive social impact. This year, National Tsing Hua University and Tunghai University are also among the first to receive the award.
