Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
Earth’s natural environments are dynamic and ever-changing in aspects like bio-evolution, lithological, hydrological, and atmospheric processes. Human presence has been episodic compared to the billion-year-long history of the Earth, however, the vast and rapid consumptions of natural resources by human beings have resulted in drastic environmental changes and threatened survivals of mankind and other species. It is urgent and necessary for us to learn the trends of global changes, sustainable capacities of energy and resource, and related risks and threats of natural disasters in order to take proper precautions and means to enable sustainable developments and common prosperities among all species.1 In this course, we will lecture and discuss primary topics about natural and manmade influences on atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere, and about the corresponding adaptions and adjustments to these influences, including industrial transformations, international conventions, domestic laws and policies, and technology breakthroughs. Weekly extending readings and discussions as home assignments are given to expand the realms of the topics, to lead the students to reflect a step further on these key issues and the Earth’s future, and to encourage them to take direct involvement into making the world a better place.
