2025 NTHU Sustainability Consensus Workshop
Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
Results/Contributions
To deepen sustainable development within the university and build a consensus among various units, Tsinghua University held a two-day, one-night "Sustainable Consensus Camp," inviting the Sustainability Directors from various units to participate. On the second day, the Vice President and senior administrators gathered to listen to and discuss the results, considering future directions for implementation. The camp used Open Space Technology (OST) to encourage participants to autonomously propose topics and form discussion groups, facilitating cross-disciplinary exchanges and collaborations to promote comprehensive discussions of diverse opinions and crystallize actionable sustainability strategies.
This camp focused on issues such as campus carbon emission control, promoting sustainable education, resource recycling, sharing economy, internalizing administrative sustainability, and student activism. It explored how to implement sustainability principles into the daily operations of the campus from the perspectives of governance, teaching and research, and practical living. Through open discussion and inter-unit collaboration, participants collectively reviewed the current state of Tsinghua University’s sustainable development, identifying opportunities and challenges in the sustainability promotion process, and proposed concrete action recommendations to foster closer cooperation between administration, teaching, research, and the student community, thereby advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ultimately, the consensus camp identified seven major themes and nineteen action proposals, including establishing a knowledge and resource sharing platform for sustainability, facilitating exchanges and capacity building among sustainable partners, optimizing the campus environment and promoting green dining while reducing single-use utensils, developing sustainable characteristics for different units and campus climate action plans, establishing stable resource support and a transparent funding mechanism, strengthening stakeholder collaboration networks, and developing a sustainable teaching community and curriculum, while encouraging high-quality sustainable research and international collaboration, among others. Through this consensus camp, Tsinghua University has further solidified a shared vision for sustainable development on campus and has established a clear direction for future campus sustainability governance and action, with plans to develop and implement a medium to long-term sustainability proposal.
