Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
This course is to introduce the coverage and basic knowledge of Materials science and Engineering. It will also cover its linkage with other inter-discipline field, the applications, existing problems and challenges that need to overcome with innovation. The goal is to inspire students' passionate on materials and motivation learning fundamentals, to find their interested area for them to go for further.
Results/Contributions

This course started with the properties/production and processing/ applications of three major fields of material types, namely metals, ceramics and polymers. Afterwards, we summarized their properties, including corrosion and degradation, thermal properties, electrical and magnetic properties, optical properties. Last but not least, this course ended with the impact that material science and engineering have on the economics, environment, society, and supplementary information about biomaterials.

In this course, professor Yew especially emphasized the criteria of choosing candidate materials for new applications, which are earth abundant and low toxicity. By applying these criteria, this course produces products which are affordable and have minimized negative impacts on the environments.

Furthermore, interviews with other professors in the NTHU MSE department are conducted by the students in this course under the request of professor Yew, so that the students can have a better understanding of their research fields and experiences as a reference for the students to select in the future. Also, the students will be arranged to pay a visit to TSMC Museum of Innovation or NAR Labs National Space organization, where they can learn more about semiconductor industry.
