Abstract/Objectives

This course is divided into three main themes: underwater archaeology practical procedures, underwater archaeological exploration techniques, and a special topic on Underwater Cultural Heritage Artifacts. Experts and scholars from various fields will be invited to impart knowledge, principles, and practical experience from diverse perspectives, allowing students to enter the world of underwater archaeology with a wide horizons.

Results/Contributions

This course builds upon the introductory course, allowing students to delve deeper into different areas of underwater archaeology after acquiring basic concepts. The course is divided into three units, each with three sub-topics. Each sub-topic video is approximately 20 minutes long, for a total course duration of 3 hours. Unit 1, " Exploring the Practice of Underwater Archaeology," is taught by Professor Cheng-Hwa Tsang. It continues the core concepts of the introductory course, explaining the procedures for underwater archaeological excavation and investigation, supplemented by footage of actual underwater archaeology team investigations to help students understand the working conditions at an archaeological site. Unit 2, " Special topic on Underwater Cultural Heritage Artifacts," is taught by Professor Ellen Hsieh. It presents three special videos on ship hulls, ceramics, and metals, explaining the characteristics of artifacts recovered from each material. A trade ceramics workshop is also included, allowing students to handle physical artifacts while watching the online course, deepening their learning. Unit 3, " Underwater Archaeological Exploration Technology," is taught by Professor Shiahn-Wern Shyue from National Sun Yat-sen University. The content covers the principles and equipment applications of underwater detection technology, and includes a field trip to Penghu where the professor operates the instruments and analyzes the detection results, enabling students to understand how scientific instruments and divers work together. The advanced courses, through interdisciplinary collaboration, impart theoretical and practical experience in underwater archaeology from multiple perspectives, helping students enter the world of underwater archaeology from a broader viewpoint.
