Abstract/Objectives

Light pollution is one of the most serious issue which has not been taken seriously as most people remain unaware of the threats posed by the blue light. Among them, the damages caused by blue and violet light result in night sky pollution, ecological damage, photoretinitis, macular degeneration, and melatonin suppression. And in long term, it may even lead to many other problems such as increasing diagnosis of breast cancer and prostate cancer among the public. Therefore, we hope to lead the students to solve the light pollution caused by the existing lighting by using the lessons learnt in the classes. By solving the problem with practical actions, we can let the society pay attention to the harm caused by electronic luminous at night and awaken the public's cognition to light pollution. Let "good light" bring in a "lighting renaissance".

Results/Contributions

After the demonstration of the first blue-hazard free lighting in the Smangus village in 2014 and 2018, Professor Jou's research team and the students of "Engineering Ethics" built the world's first blue-hazard free smart lighting demonstration for a campus in Tsing Hua University.

 

The original lamps around Xiangsi Lake were blue light enriched which affected the natural ecology and resulted in night sky pollution. With the use of our patented technology of filtering blue light, it can immediately turn the blue-hazard lights into blue-hazard free ones. The lamps can become safe for human eyes, body, night sky and ecology.

 

The construction of blue-hazard free eco-friendly lighting environment can provide further guidelines for human friendly lighting source design. The street lamp can also be night sky and ecologically friendly while providing illumination for the public.
