Sign language is a very unfamiliar territory for me. I've had classmates and students with hearing impairments, but I've never met a deaf friend who relies on sign language for communication. At the beginning of my summer internship, one of the tasks I was assigned was to assist in creating teaching presentation slides for the new set of textbooks. Throughout this task, I learned some sign language and tried to acquaint myself with the deaf culture, slowly and step by step, exploring the world of the deaf. In addition to helping advance the project, I also constantly experienced and reflected. Whenever I had a thought, even if it might still be scattered, I tried to jot it down in my notes.
Jolin Tsai's song "Womxnly" won the Song of the Year award at the Golden Melody Awards. In her acceptance speech, she said, "In any situation, I could potentially be part of some minority, so I must use empathy to love everyone around me." Sometimes, we may be willing to help when "others ask for our help", but can we do more, in the small aspects of life, to think a little more for those minorities? Of course, I think it's reasonable that most designs in the world are based on the majority, after all, it's a matter of comparative advantage. However, if we can consider a bit more for those minorities, and offer some thoughtfulness, maybe is there a chance to bring them some convenience or small moments of happiness.
On the last day of the internship, coincidentally also the first day of school, while I was tidying up my seat and completing the resignation procedures, my mentor invited me to join the remote classes. Throughout the day, I attended numerous sign language classes, including classes taught by hearing teachers and deaf teachers. Watching each teacher passionately instructing the course, and the students actively interacting, I directly and profoundly witnessed my various reflections over the past two months turn into genuine emotions.
As we grow older, life may gradually start to feel a bit monotonous. This internship period reminded me not to lose the ability to perceive and understand life.
Finally, I sincerely thank every colleague and senior at the Commerce Development Research Institute for their caring. Because of everyone's support and guidance, I was able to integrate into this job in these two months quickly. I'm pleased to have met everyone this summer.
