The "Taiwan-Thailand Clean Water Quality and Sustainable Energy Overseas Research Center" (WISE Center) will conduct the following visiting activities and seminars in 2024:
1. On January 15, 2024, Professor Chen Hsin-Wen from National Tsing Hua University visited the Faculty of Engineering at Kasetsart University (KU) in Thailand.
- Cooperation Platform: This visit was facilitated by the "Taiwan-Thailand Clean Water Quality and Sustainable Energy Overseas Research Center" (WISE Center).
- Purpose of Visit:
- Strengthen the academic partnership between both sides and enhance the synergy of research and education.
- Formally discuss the "Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technology for Circular Economy" international seminar jointly organized by Kasetsart University and the WISE Center in August 2024.
- Discussion Focus:
- Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into engineering disciplines.
- Exploring collaborative research projects with Taiwan-Thailand research centers.
- Emphasizing the importance of using technology to achieve sustainable development and the significance of international cooperation.
2. A delegation from the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) of Thailand visited the WISE Center at National Tsing Hua University from May 8 to May 11, 2024.
- Delegation Team: The MTEC delegation was led by Executive Director Dr. Toemsak Srikhirin.
- Organizer: This visit was organized by the WISE Center at National Tsing Hua University and facilitated by the National Science and Technology Council's New Southbound Policy.
- Purpose of Visit and Exchange Focus:
- Enhance the innovative research capabilities and technological advancements of Taiwan-Thailand WISE overseas research.
- Discuss follow-up cooperation topics in the Mekong River basin and net-zero emissions.
- The MTEC delegation engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Chen Hsin-Wen, the project leader at the WISE Center, Vice President Dai Nian-Hua, and Professor Lin Pei-Chi.
- Other Visit Activities:
- Visit the Instrument Technology Research Center of the National Applied Research Laboratories to discuss cooperation in the application of heavy metal electrochemical sensing technology in the Mekong River basin.
- Visit the Measurement Technology Development Center at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, focusing on cooperation discussions in environmental analysis technology.
- Future Outlook:
- This visit solidified the academic cooperation agreement between both parties and highlighted the prospects for international collaboration in clean water quality, sustainable energy, and net-zero emissions.
- Both parties agreed to jointly hold an international conference in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2024 to promote knowledge exchange and technological innovation.
3. A delegation of 50 people, including 45 students and 5 teachers, led by Professor Anchana Prathep, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University (PSU), visited National Tsing Hua University on May 7.
- Organizer: This visit was hosted by the "Taiwan-Thailand Clean Water Quality and Sustainable Energy Overseas Research Center" (WISE Center) at Tsing Hua University and the Faculty of Engineering.
- Purpose of Visit and Exchange Focus:
- Deepen the academic cooperation agreement already signed between the two universities.
- Focus discussions on international academic cooperation in green technology and net-zero emissions.
- Concentrate on cooperation in cultivating international young talent.
- Students visited the Tsing Hua University racing factory and automation robot development.
- The teaching team engaged in in-depth discussions with WISE Center scholars regarding opportunities for talent cultivation in net-zero emissions, smart technologies, and the semiconductor field.
- Special Exchange: Professor Anchana Prathep is currently assisting the Thai government in planning the road to net-zero emissions by 2050, particularly in marine blue carbon technology. The two sides exchanged opinions on academic cooperation and talent cultivation in the fields of sustainability and net-zero.
- Future Outlook: This communication aims to establish an innovative research and industry-academic exchange platform, deepen engagement in Southeast Asia, and enhance Taiwan's international influence in the field of sustainable development technology.
4. National Tsing Hua University and Kasetsart University (KU) jointly hosted the "2024 International Seminar on Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technology for Circular Economy" (SEECE-2024) from August 4 to 6, 2024.
- Promoting Unit: This co-hosting was promoted by the "Taiwan-Thailand Clean Water Quality and Sustainable Energy Overseas Research Center" (WISE Center) of National Tsing Hua University.
- Conference Focus: The seminar focused on sustainable energy, environmental technology, and agricultural circular economies, discussing their applications in achieving net-zero emissions and sustainable development goals (SDGs).
- Participants: The conference provided a platform for international academic exchange, inviting over 150 experts and scholars from countries including Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and Taiwan.
- Thai Perspective: Kasetsart University President Chongrak Wachrinrat mentioned in his speech that the university is committed to sustainable development and net-zero emissions, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2035. He especially thanked Tsing Hua University for its assistance and hoped this platform would promote innovative cooperation among scholars from various countries in the fields of biomass energy applications and waste conversion.
5. National Tsing Hua University and the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) of Thailand jointly held the "Second Taiwan-Thailand International Seminar on Innovation and Sustainability."
- Background: Since 2021, Tsing Hua University has collaborated with MTEC to establish an overseas office for the "Taiwan-Thailand Clean Water Quality and Sustainable Energy Research Center." To strengthen cooperation, Tsing Hua University, led by Senior Vice President Dai Nian-Hua, visited the Bangkok Science Park on August 7.
- Conference Focus:
- Focusing on net-zero emissions and sustainable development goals.
- Exploring the circular economy and sustainable applications of biomass and biochar in water quality treatment, energy, food, soil remediation, and climate change.
- Emphasizing innovative research on biochar that not only reduces carbon but also generates carbon credits.
- Participants: The conference was conducted in a hybrid format, inviting 12 experts and scholars from five countries—Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan—to present reports. On-site, 60 experts and scholars participated, with over 100 online participants.
- Results: The conference produced substantial results, aiding the innovative development of negative carbon technologies and promoting international cooperation between Taiwanese research teams and Thailand and ASEAN countries.
