Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
This is a college-level introductory course that provides knowledge of biology across the diverse topics of biology. We hope to inspire students to be a scientist or researcher by providing students with opportunities to analyze data, expand biological knowledge to the real world, and apply problem-solving skills to laboratory and research
Results/Contributions

The goal of this course is to help students make connection visually across the diverse topics of modern biology, to give students with strong foundation in scientific thinking and quantitative reasoning skills, and to inspire students with the excitement and the relevance of modern biology. What we want achieve in this course is to provide accurate and most up-to-date knowledge of modern biology for students. Our commitment is to provide an opportunity for students with effective learning of biology across the diverse topics. WE try to integrate diverse topics from different chapters to show how they are all related in the big picture. By reinforcing fundamental conceptual connections throughout biology, these help student to overcome compartmentalization of knowledge. We also use real data to guide student in learning and practicing data interpretation and experimental design. We focus particularly on genomics across biology in a sense that this reveals a example of how our ability to rapidly sequence DNA and proteins is transforming all areas of biology, from molecular and cellular biology to phylogenetics, physiology and ecology. At the end of each class, we ask student to synthesize the materials in the chapters and demonstrate their big picture understandings. In this course, students can use the dynamic study modules through the “Zuvio” software, which allows students to ask and answer questions by their smartphones, tablets, or laptop.
