Abstract/Objectives

This course is a required course for the In-service Master’s Program for Teachers in Taiwan Studies at National Tsing Hua University. The course has three main objectives: First, this course serves as a core course on the epistemology of Taiwan studies. It aims to cultivate students’ understanding of the social and cultural contexts of Taiwan from the perspective of anthropology. Second, this course also functions as a core course on the methodology of Taiwan studies. Students will be trained to use anthropological methods to develop research skills such as formulating questions, observing phenomena, and conducting analysis and interpretation. The focus of learning is not primarily on introducing the content of social facts, but rather on analyzing the research positions, problem constructions, research methods, and perspectives adopted by anthropologists studying different research topics. Finally, this course also includes a Taiwan Studies workshop component that emphasizes practical discussion. During this semester, the workshops will focus on two themes—the works of Hu Tai-li and food and agricultural education. Through activities such as text readings, documentary screenings, lectures, field visits, and group discussions, students will engage in collaborative learning and exchange.
