Abstract/Objectives
Due to the development of the Hsinchu Science Park, the population in Hsinchu City has increased. This study explores the urban image of Hsinchu City through the lenses of art history, cultural geography, and Walter Benjamin's cultural criticism, investigating the influence of local history on urban imagery. As a burgeoning city, Hsinchu lacks a distinct urban image. Traditional homes have transformed into trendy public art, high-rise buildings, and themed parks. This transformation evokes parallels with Walter Benjamin's concept of emerging Paris, as Hsinchu works towards establishing a new and livable urban image.
Results/Contributions

Due to the development of Hsinchu Science Park, the population of Zhubei has been increasing year by year. With the urban planning, Zhubei has become a new emerging city; however, the lack of studies on humanities, art and history of Zhubei makes it difficult to shape the urban image. Therefore, what exactly are the views (entity) and images (pictural and verbal representation) of Zhubei will be discussed in this study. Through art history, cultural geography, and the concepts of cultural criticism by Walter Benjamin, this thesis expounds the influence of local history on the city and the meaning of urban images, and then discovers the situation of Zhubei as an emerging city that lacks urban image. Besides, the past landscapes are gone, replaced by trendy public art works, high-rises concrete buildings, and new parks, which evoked the experience of Paris in The Arcade Project by Walter Benjamin, and now Zhubei is also developing a brand new and livable image.
