Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
Pekan Nanas is a small Chinese-majority town situated in southern Malaysia. In early ages, it had prospered owing to its pineapple industry. Nonetheless, the local agriculture has been declining in recent years, and the town is facing with problems of brain drain, industrial transformation, and culture disappearing. To preserving the local culture and boosting the sense of identity on their hometown for the locals, our group would head over to Paken Nanas and do the local volunteering for a month. With our plans regarding preserving the culture and memories, including the fieldworks, interviews, shooting documentaries, and publishing the local magazine, we hoped the local culture, memories, and the story of the pineapple industry could be inherited. The sense of identity and confidence for their hometown could be enhanced.

During the voluntary process, our group did the fieldwork first, and conducted multiple prefund interviews regarding the local culture, people, and industries. We also took photos for the idyllic country scenery and shot the humanistic documentaries for some residents pertaining to their stories. The documentaries for Paken Nanas would be screened in the local activity center and we invited many residents there to watch our achievements, providing the story of their hometown for them. Additionally, we integrated those interviewing works and published a local magazine. Moreover, we made a local-guide handbook, and held a culture guide for the residents to introduce the beauty of their history, culture, and hometown through our foreign vision.
