Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
This semester, Local Chronicles and Community Research is one of the required "Social Connections" courses for the College Bachelor’s Program. This course integrates documentation, narrative, and translation skills in collaboration with the Atayal Experimental School in Jianshi Township, serving as a platform for social engagement. The sustainable cultural development of the Touqian River basin and local revitalization are key topics for National Tsing Hua University in Jianshi, Hengshan, and Xiungbei, with Jianshi Township located upstream of this cultural watershed. In response to Jianshi Township’s aspiration to become a "Music Town," this course connects three university colleges to collaboratively shape the curriculum. As part of interdisciplinary social action, students will adapt the story of Jianshi’s first public physician, Inoue Inosuke (1882–1966), into a staged reading titled The Atayal Doctor Has Arrived!, which will be performed in Jianshi Township at the end of the semester. The course is structured into four major units. First, in collaboration with the College of Education and the College of Music, a capacity-building workshop will be held. Second, students will be trained in reader’s theater, conduct oral history interviews with Jianshi medical professionals, and write S-Talk advocacy materials. Third, students will visit Jiaxing Elementary School, Jianshi Junior High School, and the Atayal Academy to perform, hold discussions with secondary school students, and exchange ideas on prop-making. Fourth, a documentary team will film a short documentary recording the staged reading process. The course is designed for undergraduate students with a maximum of 25 participants, divided into four groups: two performance groups, one documentary team, and one S-Talk short video team. Course activities include lectures, interdisciplinary workshops, visits to partner institutions, reader’s theater rehearsals, oral history interviews, and advocacy writing, spanning a total of 16 weeks.
