Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
1. Lake Success(Chengkung Lake) has long been an important living hub for Tsinghua students, with student cafeterias and auditoriums gradually added around the lake, making it a vital part of campus life. However, aside from rainwater, the lake lacks other sources of replenishment, preventing the water from becoming clear and leading to long-term silt accumulation, which has muddied the water quality. The original natural scenery, such as water lilies and koi fish, has slowly disappeared, making it difficult to maintain the ecological environment of the lake. 2. To improve water quality and ecology and in response to SDG 6 (Sustainable Development Goal 6): "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all," we hope to create a high-quality waterfront ecological corridor through lake remediation and enhanced waterfront safety. Now, Tsinghua serves as an important recreational spot for the local community, and we anticipate that while maintaining water quality and ecological sustainability, we can also improve the living standards of local residents and even serve as a model for environmental sustainability education, creating a diverse landscape where people and nature thrive together.
Results/Contributions

The improvement project for the water quality of Lake Success(Chengkung Lake) and its surrounding environment at NTHU was completed and opened in 2023. After clearing the accumulated sediment from the bottom of the lake, a comprehensive filtration approach was employed, including physical, biochemical, biological, and plant filtration methods, to remove pollutants from the water. Diverse plantings and aquatic plants were introduced to create a variety of biological habitats, improving and purifying water quality, promoting water recycling, and fostering a sustainable ecological environment, thereby enhancing biodiversity and creating high-quality waterfronts.

(1)Water Quality Improvement and Purification: Block the sources of wastewater, install filtration systems to improve nutrient-rich water quality, and plant aquatic vegetation to absorb excess nutrients.

(2)Sustainable Ecological Environment: Create biodiversity and high-quality waterfronts. In addition to improving the growing conditions for plants, suitable riparian plants were also introduced to showcase the different seasonal landscapes of the lake area.

(3)Energy Saving and Waste Reduction: Utilize the elevation difference of the lake water to employ gravity flow, reducing electricity consumption and energy loss, thereby creating a sustainable campus environment.

(4)Reviving Water Activities and Surrounding Engagements: Restore the tradition of enjoying the lake and viewing lotus flowers, creating a scene where nature and culture coexist harmoniously.

(5)Safe and Accessible Circulation around the Lake: Connect the eastern and western sides of the lake area, establishing resting platforms near the water's edge, providing a fresh lake experience and scenic views.
