Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
The introduction to service science is an initial course designed for the master's students, during their first year of studies, who major in service science. The objectives of this course are to allow students to gain a comprehensive view of service science, examine their abilities to become a service professional, then develop their learning agenda and follow further service science curriculum. Service is a value co-creation process between service providers and customers. It can be modeled on relationship management among stakeholders, such as service providers, clients and service targets. It can be viewed as a system composed of front- and back-end components. It is also a result of interaction between organizations, people, technologies and information. Thus, the wide range of aspects of service brings us a great opportunity to mobilize our creativity potential along with design and implementation capabilities to become a thoughtful and skillful service professional. In order to achieve above-mentioned goals, students need to embark on journey of the exploration of service science, following the steps below: 1. To identify the phenomena occurred in services since reseaching phenomenas gave rise to science. 2. To analyze the encountered phenomena using scientific methodologies. 3. To design service using service modeling and engineering technologies. 4. To conduct prototyping services to experience the crucial differences between service processes of a service provider and a service customer. 5. To recognize the issues in service science as potential topics for follow-up studies in other courses and research projects.
Results/Contributions

This course takes place in Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County. According to the program, students are going to adapt their mindset to service-dominant logic and conduct the research on service systems in system view and value co-creation practices. Students are to use service design methodology and tools to realize service innovation projects. Service design process puts emphasis on the outside-in and inside-out models, which involve discovery, definition, ideation, prototyping and testing steps.

It is required that the term projects are conducted in cross-discipline teams, so that students could acquire the abilities in service system identification and service innovation. Since the establishment of Institute of Service Science in 2008, students and alumni have gained experience in engaged scholarship practice, which stimulates their entrepreneurial activity towards local revitalization. As a result, they have put all efforts to maintan Hsinchu's sustainable development, and at the same time demonstrated their vast potential and abilities in service innovation.
