Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract/Objectives

To support students in their academic pursuits and daily lives, National Tsing Hua University provides student housing that offers a safe, comfortable, and affordable living environment. By reducing the financial and logistical burdens of off-campus housing and commuting, the University enables students to focus on their studies and research. Affordable student housing also helps meet the diverse needs of students from different backgrounds and promotes equitable access to educational resources. Through energy-efficient design and sustainable management practices, the University strives to create a safe, supportive, and environmentally friendly residential environment that enhances students' quality of life. By fostering a diverse, inclusive, and sustainable living environment, student housing serves not only as a place to live but also as an important space for personal growth and social interaction, creating a positive cycle of learning, living, and community engagement.

Results/Contributions

1. The University has 25 student dormitories, categorized into undergraduate and graduate student housing. Students may apply for accommodation according to their student status and the designated application schedule.

2. As of September 2025, the University had a total enrollment of 18,393 students, with 8,502 dormitory beds and 7,848 students residing on campus. The housing provision rate (total number of beds divided by total student enrollment) was 46.22%, exceeding that of most universities in Taiwan. The dormitory occupancy rate (number of residents divided by total number of beds) was 85.60%. With some beds reserved for students with medical needs, the University strives to make effective use of its housing resources and provide on-campus accommodation opportunities to as many students as possible.

3. On-campus student housing offers more affordable accommodation rates compared to off-campus rentals:

(1) On-Campus Student Housing

  • Rooms with shared bathrooms: NT$6,750–16,600 per semester; NT$2,700–6,640 for the summer; NT$16,200–39,840 per year.
  • Suites / Single Rooms: NT$10,940–27,800 per semester; NT$4,376–11,120 for the summer; NT$26,256–66,720 per year.

(2) Off-Campus Rentals

  • Rooms with shared bathrooms: Approximately NT$6,000 per month or NT$72,000 per year.
  • Suites: Approximately NT$8,000 per month or NT$96,000 per year.

4. Since February 2024, the Ministry of Education has implemented the On-Campus Housing Subsidy Program for College and University Students, providing a subsidy of NT$5,000 per bed per semester for eligible domestic students, or NT$7,000 for students from low-income and lower-middle-income households, to help alleviate their financial burden of accommodation.

5. Students from low-income households are exempt from basic dormitory fees, with fee waivers applied according to their academic program and gender.

6. To promote energy conservation, reduce carbon emissions, and prevent energy waste, the dormitories use an air-conditioning card system. Students use these cards to activate air-conditioning units and primary lighting equipment.
