Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
In view of the fact that students often eat take-out food , the amount of single-use plastics waste on campus has increased sharply compared with previous years, especially after the prosperity of food delivery platforms. The single-use plastics immediately become waste, and the disposal itself is a problem to be solved. Notably, the current situation of using a large number of plastic materials is also a hidden danger of exacerbating global warming. Therefore, how to reduce the use of these single-use plastics is an issue that the school hopes to tackle. Based on our own life experience, our group has observed that students, especially who have been doing research in the laboratory for many years, often have the habit of taking out meals in order to quickly go back to work or continue their experiments. Through the interviews with the students, we learned how they care about the conveniences to get their meals, which promted us to find the operation mode that is most likely to break through the current situation.

The purpose of Campaign against Disposable Tableware in NTHU is to put environmental protection into practice. It gathers the students from different departments who are on the same wavelength. During the period of competition, organizers invite the professional specialist lecturer to share their personal experience of career life in the field of sustainable development and introduce how to make a proposal. In addition, they also arrange a period of time to make a field survey.

Besides the final proposal, how attach importance to against disposable tableware and the opinion of this measure from restaurants. Precisely, president for general affairs said that the main obstacle of implementing the “circulating tableware rental system” is the cost of system operation and repair system which is high. Moreover, through the interview of restaurant managers, we understand that their consideration of food safety and the cost of washing the dishes.

Based on the above information and consideration, we design a system, which NTHU provide eco-friendly tableware and the restaurants are responsible to washing their dishes. In order to make sufficient incentives to encourage the students to join our proposal, we sell our boxed lunch near the department. By this way, those students who pursue the convenience will join us.

To sum up, NTHU only need to provide eco-friendly tableware, the site of recycle the lunch box, and the people who are responsible to sell or recycle boxed lunch. This proposal can reduce the cost of using the tableware and reach the goal of sustainable management.
