Abstract/Objectives
This course enables students to understand the chanting art of ancient and modern poetry through a comprehensive study of its concept and performance. They can then master its musicality through the analysis of rhythm and composition, so that the form and meaning can be perfectly matched to reflect its aesthetics. It is hoped that the artistic tradition of the poetry chanting communities can be passed along to our younger generations, through popularizing ancient literature/paintings/calligraphy while touching base with modern language and art.
Results/Contributions
The achievement of this course can be explained in two aspects: Firstly, the students learned to analyze and appreciate ancient and modern poetry. We reproduce and reinvent the musical and prosodic form of a poem, while highlighting the emotion and the life experiences the artist intended to convey. Secondly, the students practiced the methods and melodies passed down by our traditional poetry chanting societies. In addition to the classical poetry, we also examined the continuation of this chanting tradition in modern music and literature. We can still see a silver lining of this dying art form, as well as the aspirations of our young people to preserve this ancient heritage.
