On Mother's Day, I visited the famous singer Da Yu Luo’s song "Lukang,The Little Town" with mainland Chinese students 。
In the morning, we were guided by Lukang cultural historians to visit the historic sites on foot: the national-level Longshan Temple, Shanxing Street , an introduction to incense making, Xing'an Temple , Remember Hall, Nine-turns Lane,Shih Yih Hall, Ding Family Ancestral House, and we took a a rickshaw ride through the streets of Lukang to visit Gentlemen Lane and Tian Hou Temple。
In the afternoon, we DIY made the famous Lukang delicacy called "Phoenix Eye Cake" The ingredients are white rice and white sugar. We ground the powders, mixed them in the best proportions, used wooden molds to press and grind them, and made delicate and slender pastries shaped like beautiful phoenix eyes. “Phoenix Eye Cake” are fragile and difficult to pick up, so they must be gently picked up with the thumb and index finger. If one does not have delicate movements like a cultured scholar, it is difficult for an ordinary person to pick it up. Therefore, tasting Phoenix Eye Cake symbolizes social status。
Osmanthus Incense Tablets, originated from Daoism, flourished in the Song Dynasty, and became popular during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, they became elegant and precious treasures used and bestowed by the imperial court. With a history of thousands of years, they were used by literati, aristocrats, and common people, as well as the nobility in the imperial court. In addition to carrying fragrance, these incense tablets made with special medicinal materials also have the function of warding off evil and purifying。
We also tasted the famous local snacks in Lukang, such as Beef Tongue Cake, Noodle Tea, and Meat Buns. This allowed everyone to temporarily escape from the pressure of studies and enjoy a fruitful afternoon on this holiday。
