Abstract/Objectives
In cyberbullying research, the relationship between the dispositional empathy and helping tendency and behavior of bystanders of cyberbullying is unstable. Compared with a general crisis or physical bullying situation, a cyberbullying situation contains more vague and unconfirmed information. In such a situation, the intensity of cyberbullying bystanders’ motivation to correctly understand these messages (accuracy motivation) may be the key factor affecting their helping tendency and behavior. Moreover, accuracy motivation may be the key factor causing the unstable relationship between cyberbullying bystanders’ dispositional empathy and their helping tendency and behavior. To clarify these relationships and more effectively understand and predict helping tendency and behavior in this context, we are proposing a 2-year research plan to test the effect and mechanism of dispositional empathy and accuracy motivation on the helping tendency and behavior of cyberbullying bystanders. Based on these results, we will propose suggestions to maintain and improve the helping tendency and behavior of cyberbullying bystanders.
