Abstract/Objectives
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the concept of "care" as a lens for understanding the operational logic of modern society and to reflect on the gendered implications of social bonds formed through caregiving practices. Course Structure: 1.Introduction to Care: What is care? Under what conditions is caregiving considered the "responsibility" of certain groups? This section will also examine how society assigns "value" to care, how such values are recognized, and how disproportionate rights and welfare are distributed. 2.Care from Personal, Family, and National Perspectives: This section explores how families with weakened caregiving functions acquire care resources and outsource caregiving labor to fill care gaps. It will also examine how these arrangements reshape intersecting relationships of gender, class, and ethnicity within the family. Additionally, the course will analyze the public social care service systems provided by the state, the controversies surrounding the outsourcing and commercialization of care, and the implications of public care practices for care justice and liberation.
