This academic and social engagement forum was organized to celebrate Professor Yang Rur-bin’s election as an Academician of Academia Sinica, serving as an opportunity to foster dialogue between academia and social practice. The forum invited three scholars and social activists—Professor Fu Dai-wie, Professor Tanigawa Masao, and Mr. Yang Rur-men—who have long been dedicated to social issues, to share their life experiences and social reflections.
Professor Fu Dai-wie reviewed the development of social movements in Taiwan, tracing changes from the pre- and post-martial law eras to the present, while also reflecting on his deep friendship with Professor Yang. Professor Yang, in turn, discussed his concerns and reflections on modern Taiwan, from Reflections on The Salute of 1949 to Thinking the Republic of China, acknowledging the profound influence of Professor Fu on his thinking. The Q&A session further encouraged the audience to explore the future of social movements from a systems theory perspective.
Professor Tanigawa Masao introduced the art of calligraphy and painting, sharing his cultural exchanges with Professor Yang. Professor Yang had previously gifted Professor Tanigawa with rare calligraphy and painting artifacts, demonstrating their close bond as kindred spirits in the art world.
Mr. Yang Rur-men humorously recounted his journey in social activism, discussing the balance between financial stability and the pursuit of ideals. He posed a thought-provoking question to the audience: “Are there good people among social activists?” sparking deep reflection. Professor Yang also shared an anecdote about being mistakenly imprisoned, adding both humor and a reflective dimension to the discussion.
This forum successfully facilitated interaction between academia and society. The insightful experiences shared by the three speakers sparked lively discussions among attendees, making it an enriching and meaningful event that concluded successfully.
