This project aims to explore how modernist music in Taiwan was shaped within the context of the Cold War ideology on an international level. Using Hsu Tsang-Hwei as a case study, specific events and reports from the 1950s to 1973 in Taiwan will be discussed to examine how he shaped the image of "modern music" and its relationship with his interactions with Japan and the United States. This research will primarily utilize oral history and archival research methods. It is expected that from a musical perspective, this study will present another aspect of how Taiwan interacted with the international community during the Cold War era. Previous research on modernist music in Taiwan did not consider the external influence of the Cold War, and conversely, research on the Cold War has not touched on the issue of modernist music in Taiwan. This research aims to use Hsu Tsang-Hwei as an example to combine these two existing research fields and establish a starting point for discussing East Asian musical interactions from a Cold War perspective.
