Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
In 2019, Taiwan Ministry of Education published the new curriculum guidelines and introduced self-directed learning(SDL) curriculum into the high school for the first time, expecting to foster students’SDL skills. With our field observation in schools, however, many schools were unable to provide students with enough guides and support, which hindered students from transforming from passive learning to SDL. To solve these problems, we developed a series of “SDL pre-courses”and walked into high schools to assist students in exploring their SDL topics, writing SDL plans and reflecting on their SDL journey. We expect to inspire more high school students in Taiwan to achieve their potential of learning and to become SDLers.
Results/Contributions

We kicked off the project in July, 2021, started from reviewing literature and conducting questionnaire research, and gradually developed the complete SDL pre-course lesson plan. We then invited high school students to test the course and revised the lesson plan according to the feedbacks.

After confirming the lesson plan and the course form, we published the news of course to every high schools and have been invited to teach for 50 courses. Our on-going courses have scored more than 4 (with maximum of 5) on diverse indicators of student feedbacks. In addition, schools’ demands and students’ situations were not the same, we thus have been keeping on collecting student feedbacks and analyzing and discussing the lesson plan based on them. Therefore, we have developed diverse lesson plans to assist students with higher effectiveness: course hour can be 1 to 3 hours, course form can be online or physical and course content can be adjusted according to students’ demands. These efforts have resulted in nice performance. Not only have indicators of student feedbacks increased stably along with the iterations, many schools were also willing to invite us again to teach.

After we finished developing the courses, in order to provide high-quality teachers and courses for schools with inadequate resources, we took part in the “Young Generation: youth charitable action plans”and were selected as winning team and financially supported by Paolyta Charity Foundation with 300 thousand NTD. Therefore, we will be able to teach for needy high schools in different regions with no worries.
