Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
The aims of this course is to introduce the technology platforms, methodologies, and the design of organ on a chip and artificial organs. This course emphasizes the following objectives: 1. Knowledge of organ on a chip design including brain on a chip, lung on a chip, liver on a chip, and disease on a chip. 2.Introduction of various engineering issues surrounding the design of artificial organs including biopolymers and biocompatibility, stem cell technology, biomimetic systems, design principles for tissue and blood contact, and control of artificial organs. 3. Application of the knowledge to the design of artificial organs including circulatory support devices, drug delivery systems, artificial kidney, and other bioartificial organs.
Results/Contributions

Firstly, this course delivered the basic knowledge of the biopolymers and biocompatibility, stem cell technology, microfluidic and biomimetic systems. Then, students were also guided to learn the novel design and application of the methodologies and the different types of organ on a chip and bioartificial organs. The learning effectiveness of students was evaluated by mid-term exam and pop quiz. A final oral report and the contribution of discussion were also evaluated. The oral report topics are varied such as multi-corneal barrier-on-a-chip, cancer and immune organs modeling, retina-on a-chip, bioartificial kidney, human islet organoids, high-throughput co-culture of liver and tumor microtissues. The students applied they have learned from the course to the paper reading and discussion.
