Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
The new historical novel in Taiwan is flourishing, not only deconstructing official history but also establishing the everyday lives, subjectivity, and voice of marginalized figures, attempting to reconstruct a history that belongs to the Taiwanese people. Furthermore, through various techniques and perspectives, it recreates the differing memories of gender, class, and ethnicity. Because it transcends the pursuit of "truth," some scholars have proposed the notion of "meta-historical fiction," pointing out the latest characteristics of this genre: including self-referentiality, self-reflexivity, ex-centrism, and parody. Regardless of the type of historical novel, "Taiwaneseness" is portrayed in multiple interpretations. Currently, Taiwan also hosts the "Taiwan Historical Novel Award" and the "Global Chinese Literature Nebula Award," among others, making this a literary genre and cultural phenomenon with great potential.
