Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
The Education Development Center of the School of Life Sciences and Medicine held a two-day "National High School Biology Teachers' Autonomous Learning Camp on Microorganisms and Fermentation" from August 23 to August 24, 2023. This workshop aimed to assist high school teachers in developing life-based practical courses grounded in scientific principles and enhancing the application concepts of microorganisms. Through teaching on mushroom cultivation and natto fermentation, participants gained a better understanding of the nature and operational modes of fungi and bacteria, making them important introductory bridges for students in the field of microbiology. The use of materials that are familiar and readily available will facilitate students' autonomous learning.
Results/Contributions

This project is a collaboration between the Biology Subject Center of Hsinchu High School and the Hsinchu City Teacher Guidance Team. The curriculum is aimed at nationwide high school biology teachers and is structured as a two-day intensive training program. The training is divided into two sessions, during which participants engage in hands-on activities such as mushroom cultivation and the purification, cultivation, and fermentation of natto. These experiments are designed to integrate theoretical knowledge of microbial applications, enabling participants to fully understand key microbial operating procedures.

Participants can adapt the practical course content into an extended high school curriculum, incorporating scientific knowledge into their teaching. The program covers topics such as the introduction of microbial resistance mechanisms, antibacterial testing, and microbial detection, addressing important issues arising from the interaction between microorganisms and humans. It also demonstrates how to assess the degree of microbial contamination in food through simple and feasible methods.

In the course on microbial structure analysis and staining, participants are taught various bacterial staining methods, including Gram staining. The methods learned will contribute to their future teaching of high school students, promoting independent learning in high schools.

The training took place on August 23rd and August 24th in the year 2023, with participants coming from various parts of the country. Over 112 participants attended the program, expressing positive feedback on its richness, interest, and relevance to daily life. Based on the responses and interactions of the participants, it is clear that they highly appreciate the training. Some have even begun planning to incorporate the content into their high school teaching materials, emphasizing the richness of the course and its significant contribution to their future microbiology teaching and training of students' independent learning.
