Abstract/Objectives

Since the 2023-2024 academic year, the Master’s Program in Chinese Language and Culture at NTHU has hosted the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, welcoming 8 to 15 students aged 16 to 19 from around the world each year. During their stay from September to May, students take Mandarin courses focusing on language fundamentals, conversational practice, and Taiwanese culture. Classes are small and interactive, taught by students specializing in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at our College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Through teaching and assisting in cultural activities, our students gain practical experience, enhancing both their teaching skills and cross-cultural communication abilities.

Results/Contributions

Since 2023, the Master’s Program in Chinese Language and Culture has consecutively hosted the Rotary International Youth Exchange Chinese Language Program for three years. In the 2025–2026 academic year, the program welcomed 14 international exchange students aged 16 to 19, from countries including the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, and Australia. Running from September to May, the program provides students with foundational Chinese language instruction, daily conversation training, and cultural experiences. Classes are conducted in small, interactive groups and are taught by faculty from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences with expertise in Chinese language teaching, complemented by situational conversation exercises and themed activities to strengthen language skills and deepen understanding of Taiwanese culture. After one academic year, students generally acquire basic Chinese communication abilities, successfully advance one level in the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL), and adapt well to life in Taiwan.

In addition, our students participate in program implementation through internships, assisting with lesson preparation, classroom support, and activity organization. This allows them to gain practical teaching experience, enhance cross-cultural communication and organizational skills, and apply academic knowledge in real-world contexts, thereby fulfilling social engagement objectives. This process not only broadens our students’ international perspectives but also promotes international collaboration and mutual learning. The program has received high recognition from the Rotary International District 3501 Youth Exchange Committee and has been approved for consecutive annual implementation.
