Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
This course enables students to deeply engage with Hsinchu’s local cultural asset—the pith paper craft—allowing this fading traditional art form and intangible heritage to sustainably evolve within the urban context. Through creative strategies, the course facilitates contemporary design expressions of the craft by integrating digital technologies with traditional techniques, enhancing its novelty, interactivity, and experiential value. Advanced technologies such as shape memory alloys and digital fabrication methods are introduced to expand the kinetic artistic expression of pith paper. In collaboration with local pith paper artisans in Hsinchu, students gain hands-on experience and knowledge in memory-based and interactive product design, applying these skills toward innovative design outcomes.
Results/Contributions
Students in the course have developed prototype works with strong market potential. The course will be sustained over time, with ongoing refinement of its teaching modules and prototypes, aiming for presentation at international cultural and creative design exhibitions, such as Milan Design Week and Bangkok Design Week, to expand opportunities in the global market. Simultaneously, the program seeks to enhance the depth and breadth of both teaching and research, while strengthening international connections.
The current teaching module has been awarded the highest honor, the “Grand Prize (最優秀賞),” at Art & Technology Tohoku 2024, an international competition organized by the Japan Society of Art and Science in Tohoku.
