Abstract/Objectives
Huayu BEST Program students experience Hakka culture of Lei Tea in Beipu.
Results/Contributions

As part of the Huayu BEST Program, foreign students had the opportunity to visit Beipu, Taiwan, to deeply experience the rich and historic Hakka Lei Tea culture. Beipu is one of Taiwan's renowned Hakka settlements, known for its strong Hakka cultural atmosphere and traditions. During this cultural experience, the students learned the process of making Lei Tea.

Under the guidance of tea house staff, the students had the chance to make Lei Tea themselves. From selecting fresh tea leaves, peanuts, and sesame seeds to grinding them into powder using a mortar and pestle, this process was filled with thoughtful craftsmanship and skill. The students not only learned the techniques of making Lei Tea but also gained an understanding of its cultural significance in Hakka society, experiencing how this beverage is closely linked to the daily life and festive activities of the Hakka people.

This Hakka Lei Tea cultural experience not only allowed the foreign students to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's Hakka culture but also enhanced their appreciation and respect for Taiwan's diverse food culture and traditional practices.
