Abstract/Objectives
In the era of COVID-19 epidemic, education systems in every country are facing great challenge. Students are forced to stay at home for distance learning, testing students’ self-directedness on learning. This study aims to investigate the cause of middle school students’ self-directedness under epidemic era in eight countries. Multiple regression analysis is used and parenting style, teaching style and family environment are considered as factors. In addition, semi-structured interview is adopted to clarify the key causes of formation of self-directedness. This study is collaboratively conducted by NTHU ILST and Snapask Inc., and will collect data of middle school students, teachers and parents from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. The results will be presented in the 2021 Self-directed Learning White Paper published by Snapask Inc.
Results/Contributions

We have now finished the design of questionnaires and interview outlines, with students, teachers and parents invited to be subjects, and the translation. Questionnaires will be delivered to several middle schools in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and quantitative analysis will then be conducted to clarify how self-directedness is affected by different factors and the characteristics of students with different levels of self-directedness. On the other hand, qualitative research will be executed, after the quantitative analysis, in eight countries/regions to analyze the causes of self-directedness, students’ learning models, and how self-directedness can be fostered.

Snapask Inc. has published 2020 Self-directed Learning White Paper last year and will extend and expand research conducted last year. The result will be presented in 2021 Self-directed Learning White Paper, written in Chinese and English and published in eight countries/regions, to assist students, parents, teachers and educational institution in understanding the factors which affecting the learning self-directedness under epidemic era. By doing this, we can collaboratively build learning environments that foster students’ learning self-directedness.
