During the Cold War, the United States sought to strengthen its image as a world leader through classical music. The Boston Symphony Orchestra's 1960 tour of Asia was the largest cultural diplomacy initiative by the United States involving classical music in East Asia during this period. This project not only examines the international negotiation processes as presented in U.S. official documents but also investigates the public reception and evaluation of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the countries visited. It aims to create a multi-directional dialogue between small powers and a single dominant power. The project primarily explores the political and diplomatic negotiation functions of classical music across the Pacific during the Cold War and investigates the influence of the United States on Taiwan's Western classical music scene after World War II. Ultimately, the project proposes a research precedent for American cultural diplomacy in East Asia through classical music across the Pacific.
