Cross-Sectoral Dialogue with the Public Sector:
Our university has established long-term and ongoing partnerships with local governments, NGOs, and community organizations in the Greater Hsinchu region. In 2024, thirteen project teams collaborated with 22 government agencies, 208 non-governmental organizations, and 75 schools. On average, one to two meetings or workshops were held each week, totaling more than 700 sessions throughout the year.
These close collaborations have yielded significant outcomes for regional sustainable development. In June 2023, in response to the United Nations Freshwater Challenge, the university partnered with the Second River Bureau of the Water Resources Agency, Hsinchu City Government, Fubon Life, and local civic groups to promote cross-sector cooperation among industry, government, academia, and the community. Together, they issued the Touqian River Basin Action Declaration and signed an adoption agreement for the Jiugang Island section at the river’s estuary. In December 2023, the university released the Greater Hsinchu Regional Revitalization Action Declaration, jointly signed by twelve local government officials and township leaders to affirm their commitment to sustainable regional development. Most recently, on November 27, 2024, the Hsinchu Science Park and its enterprises announced the Greater Hsinchu Collaborative Prosperity Initiative, advancing toward a vision of “urban-rural harmony and social sustainability.”
Advancing Sustainability with NGOs:
The university works closely with local organizations and NGOs to address sustainability issues, integrating collaboration into academic programs to encourage student participation. In 2024, these initiatives engaged 5,485 student participants and 7,179 local stakeholders.
Faculty members have also leveraged their research expertise to address local sustainability challenges. Examples include:
(1) The Institute of Service Science and the Tsing Hua College team applied electronic nose technology to Hsinchu County’s Guanxi coffee industry, building a sustainable local coffee production and consumption chain.
(2) Faculty from the Department of Arts and Design collaborated with the local glass industry to repurpose waste glass into glass coffee filters as an alternative to disposable paper filters, promoting a circular green economy.
(3) The Institute of Analytical and Environmental Sciences conducted water quality research in the Touqian River Basin to advance sustainable water resource management.
