Abstract/Objectives
"Historical Study of the Bunun Mayuan Tribe" is a local chronicle completed over two years, marking the first village history of the six villages in Wanjhong Township, Hualien County. This book is co-authored by Liu Liushuqin and Professor Zheng Anxi. It is the first written record of the social culture and historical memories of the Bunun people of the Dan community after their eastward migration, documenting nearly 100 years of the tribe’s migration and rebirth in Wanjhong Township, Hualien County. From their highland settlements to modern villages, the people of Mayuan have worked hard to preserve their traditional cultural roots while also creating new ways of life and ecological spaces. The history of Mayuan Village is that of a tribe affected by government-mandated migration, and it records their rebirth. The villagers have lost lives, burned homes, and struggled with their identity and recognition due to colonial policies, the Pacific War, and martial law. Yet, they never gave up. Despite the pressures of foreign cultures, they continued to protect their ethnic dignity and preserve their culture. How have the Bunun people of Mayuan redefined their identity in modern society and revitalized their spirit? This village history not only records the history of Mayuan Village, but also reflects the sustainable resilience and adaptability of other Bunun groups through the modern history they have walked.
