In 2024, the project plans to conduct a specialized study and publication on Warship Guangbing. Warship Guangbing was incorporated into the Beiyang Fleet on September 17, 1894, participating in the Battle of the Yellow Sea. On February 17, 1895, together with other warships besieged at Weihaiwei, it surrendered to the Japanese forces. After being refitted and armed at Kure Naval Arsenal in Hiroshima, it was deployed to patrol the Taiwan Strait. On December 21, 1895, Warship Guangbing ran aground and sank off the southern coast of Penghu Island due to a storm.
In 2010, the underwater archaeology team discovered remnants of Warship Guangbing south of Jiangjun Islet, Penghu. Although the ship’s hull had either disappeared or been buried by coral reefs, scattered items and shells from the ship were found on the seabed. A systematic excavation and documentation of the site were conducted in 2011, resulting in the recovery of 117 artifacts from the wreck.
Based on historical documents and archaeological findings, Warship Guangbing has a compelling story, making it an ideal subject for popular science publication. Extensive materials from both Chinese and Japanese sources have been collected, and the manuscript is nearing completion.
