Abstract/Objectives
This lecture offers a personal perspective on the modernity of Islam in the Middle East, reflecting on experiences from travels in Syria and beyond. Through firsthand encounters, we will explore how Middle Eastern cultures navigate between historical traditions and contemporary transformations, and how Islam adapts to globalization and modern challenges. Key objectives include: Understanding the diversity of Middle Eastern cultures and religious practices, challenging common stereotypes. Examining Islamic modernity and its relationship with social, political, and technological developments. Sharing travel observations and reflections to foster a deeper appreciation of the Islamic world. This lecture is ideal for those interested in the Middle East, Islamic culture, and globalization, offering unique insights through a personal lens.
Results/Contributions

This lecture provides a deeper understanding of the Middle East and the modernity of Islam. Through the speaker’s personal experiences in Syria and beyond, I gained insights into the social, cultural, and religious transformations in the region, highlighting the diversity within the Islamic world. The talk explored how modernity influences Islamic societies, including developments in education, technology, and politics, while also addressing differences between Western perspectives and local realities. I was particularly inspired by the speaker’s perspective on the coexistence of religion and modernity, which made me rethink how different civilizations interact in the context of globalization. This learning experience has deepened my appreciation and understanding of Islamic culture and reinforced the importance of dialogue and exchange in today’s interconnected world.
