Abstract/Objectives

The event was a workshop aimed at discussing issues surrounding children's sexual education in Taiwan, particularly in the context of anti-LGBT advocacy. It featured advocates sharing their experiences fighting against such organizations. The first half focused on the "Rainbow Moms" incident, detailing how religious groups manipulate volunteer parents to influence the education system in ways that undermine gender equality. Participants learned about grassroots mobilization techniques to resist these efforts. The second half involved a discussion on the inappropriate sexual concepts found in school materials. These concepts, often infused with religious bias, hinder adolescents' understanding of healthy sexuality and can contribute to feelings of self-contempt among victims of sexual violence. Overall, the event intended to raise awareness and inspire participants to improve sexual education practices.

Results/Contributions (500 words)

This event took the form of a workshop, inviting advocates who have previously fought against anti-LGBT organizations to share their social movement experiences and lead participants in discussions on issues related to children's sexual education in Taiwan.

In the first half of the event, the host provided detailed information about the event and shared the journey of parental groups petitioning government agencies. The “Rainbow Moms” incident encompasses multiple issues, including religion, gender, and education, revealing how religious organizations use rhetoric and group norms to tightly control volunteer parents, collaborating with the leadership of elementary school parent associations to infiltrate the education system through loopholes, engaging in proselytizing and teaching gender concepts that violate principles of gender equality. The speaker shared their experience of founding a fan page to rally like-minded parents for a press conference, teaching how to gather social forces to resist opposing organizations by creating event summaries, contacting legislators and council members, and other methods.

In the second half of the event, we discussed the inappropriate sexual concepts present in school materials. These concepts, besides carrying religious overtones, fail to convey accurate sexual knowledge, preventing adolescents from viewing sexual behavior and bodily development during puberty in a healthy light. Furthermore, they lead victims of sexual violence to choose self-contempt when they are attacked, making it difficult for them to seek help. Throughout the discussion, we gained a practical understanding of how the implementation of sexual education in teaching environments affects children, and considered ways to improve today's sexual education.
