"Sharp power" was a concept proposed by the National Endowment for Democracy in 2017 to analyze the phenomenon of foreign influence operations that undermine democracy, particularly by China and Russia. Before the concept of "sharp power" was introduced, Wu Jieh-min proposed the concept of "China factor" in 2009 to analyze China's influence operations on Taiwan, and convened scholars to explore the types, domains, and mechanisms of Chinese influence, as well as the different responses of local society. This course will introduce the key findings of Professor Wu Jieh-min and his team in this research area over six sessions. Some units will also invite relevant scholars to lead students in exploring specific topics in depth.
