Abstract/Objectives
Nature writing is a unique category in the literary field, which not only uses natural environments as a background to express the author's personal emotions and present the interaction between humans and nature, but also incorporates scientific knowledge from biology, ecology, chemistry, and other fields. With an intellectual and rational attitude, it blends science and literature to explore and care about the changes in the natural environment. This course will begin with Henry David Thoreau's "Walden; or, Life in the Woods". By reading this seminal work of nature writing, we will experience its timeless naturalistic ideas. Next, we will read Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" to understand the significance of this environmental literary classic and its contributions to society. Then, with E.O. Wilson's "Half Earth", we will learn about the severity of environmental destruction and loss of biodiversity that humans face today, and discuss how we can take action to respond to such destruction. Finally, using the backdrop of Taiwan's mountains and waters in Wu Ming-Yi's new book "The Land of Little Rain," we will discuss Taiwan's conservation issues and relevant scientific developments. This course is not primarily focused on literary analysis, but rather uses a scientific approach to discuss the environmental and ecological conservation issues behind these classic works. Through reading these works and practical outdoor experiences, we will guide students to explore their own existence, reflect on their connection with nature, and ignite their care for the natural environment.
